Second Call to Action

SAVE OUR HOMES
Second Action Plan

We are calling for our second targeted action to begin Thursday March 24th.  Congress is not in session from March 21st to the 27th. The Senators will be back in their states, meeting with their constituents. This presents two opportunities: to call their local office while they’re home, and to call their Washington Office, which will not be as busy.

Objectives:
We have two specific efforts in the Senate we want to support.
The first is to increase the number of Senators that add their names to the letter sent to Sec. Geithner and other relevant bodies on March 3rd in support of three changes to the current foreclosure prevention effort. One of those changes is a neutral third-party review of any declined modification application (our single message). Signers of the letter are Senators Merkley and Snowe, Senators Akaka (D-HI), Begich (D-AK), Bingaman (D-NM), Blumenthal (D-CT), Durbin (D-IL), Franken (D-MN), Lautenberg (D-NJ), Leahy (D-VT), Levin (D-MI), Menendez (D-NJ), Reed (D-RI), Schumer (D-NY), Shaheen (D-NH), Tom Udall (D-NM), Whitehouse (D-RI), and Wyden (D-OR).

The second is a bill introduced by Senator Reed (RI). Senate Bill S.489 Preserving Homes and Communities Act of 2011 includes sweeping improvements to the current mismanaged HAMP effort. The bill has seven co-sponsors: Senators Durbin, Merkley, Whitehouse, Franken, Leahy, Sanders, and Brown (Ohio). Bill found here.

Overall Strategy:

Our efforts are focused on increasing the numbers of Senators who support the March 3rd letter, and supporting the Senate Banking Committee in their efforts to pass S.489 now.

Our single message for the Senators will vary slightly. Message No.1 will be for those Senators already supporting the effort. Message No.2 will be for Senators we are trying to persuade on-board. Message No.3 is for Republicans that support the House bill to cancel HAMP. Since we do not as of yet have very large numbers, our efforts need to be concentrated to be most effective.

All contact numbers can be found at: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/committee.xpd?id=SSBK . Just click on the Senator, then click on official site.  Phone numbers are at the bottom.

Message No.1
"I’m an angry homeowner. I've done everything asked of me and I’m losing my home. I don’t trust the bank and want a neutral third party to review my file. You cannot leave the fate of my family to the banks. We support the 18 Senators that sent the March 3rd letter to Sec. Geithner to FIX HAMP and we want more Senators to join those 18.  We also ask that you do everything possible to pass the Preserving Homes and Communities Act of 2011 Bill S.489.   Please help us SAVE OUR HOMES!

Message No.2 Calls
"I’m an angry homeowner. I've done everything asked of me and I’m losing my home. I don’t trust the bank and want a neutral third party to review my file. You cannot leave the fate of my family to the banks. We support the 18 Senators that sent the March 3rd letter to Sec. These Senators are on the Banking Committee but did not sign the March 3rd letter or cosponsor S.489. The following Senators are all must-calls.
Benett (D-CO)                         Brown (D-OH)                        Hagan (D-NC)
Kohl (D-WI)                            Tester (D-MT)                         Warner (D-VA)
Kirk  (R-IL)                             Corker (D-TN)                        Carpo (R-IN)

Message No.3 Call
"I’m an angry homeowner. I've done everything asked of me and I’m losing my home. I don’t trust the bank and want a neutral third party to review my file. You cannot leave the fate of my family to the banks. According to the newest HAMP numbers, only 5% of declined HAMP applications were due to insufficient income—but 27% were from lost documents. Families are not hurt by HAMP; they are hurt because the banks do not implement its guidelines. Please FIX HAMP now to help us SAVE OUR HOMES!

Republican Senators from the Banking Committee
Shelby (R-AL)             DeMint (R-SC)

Next Target:
The Third call to action will reach out to the Democratic Senators that have not signed the March 3rd letter. We would like to start this one week later, on the 24th.  This will be a larger effort because it will require an additional 25 Democratic Senators be contacted.
